With these kind of dogs taking refuge in such place, don’t expect to find Teacup Yorkies of quality.
With older Teacup Yorkies, one needs to understand that they have experienced a great deal. These dogs were not treated accordingly by their former owners which in turn developed to mistrust to other people. They also developed habits that are unusual in some way – but all this is part of the Teacup Yorkie behavior which had been negatively built. But this is not to say that many of these abandoned dogs in Teacup Yorkie rescues are hopeless in this regard.
While some are taken in to further their well-being in the hands of professionals, a lot of these dogs have the ability also to respond to certain activities – in a positive way. Many Teacup Yorkies have shown progress in terms of health and other change of attitude/behavior, which is sustained thanks to the very supportive staff who are there to care for them.
Various reasons why owners resort to place their Teacup Yorkies in rescue homes. Some owners may have had to settle to another place; some dogs have medical problems and couldn’t possibly care for them any longer; and some simply give them up in favor of another breed, realizing in the end that they prefer the new dog and chose to place the Teacup Yorkie to a place where others want one, without the hassle of getting all expensive (which is rare, by the way).
Some are rescued Teacup Yorkie puppies and moms from puppy mills – places where greedy people treat this breed for breeding purposes only, for profit. Since Teacup Yorkie Terriers are a good breed of their own and many people want to own one, some heartless individuals incorporate this kind of business scheme where proper care, grooming, and affection are simply out in the equation. Teacup Yorkie moms are just being fed to live and breed, and most of the puppies have no papers to speak of their pedigree. Most of them are mixed breed, though.
However, if you still want to own a Teacup Yorkie from a rescue home, make sure that you decide for the best. These dogs need shelter, more love and care – and if you have the capacity to provide all of them contact your nearest Teacup Yorkie rescue home as soon as possible.

My mother is interested in a teacup yorkie. I have little experienc with this particular breed and I believe in adoption/rescue over promoting breeders. My Mom and Dad are both semi-retired but they do work. How appropriate for them is a dog like this? After some research I am thinking of adopting one for her.

Very appropriate. Do they like small dogs? I would say that yorkies are age appropriate for those who are in the retiring years. Adoption and rescue is most certainly the best way to go! Good luck, I hope you find a great fit.
